As ironic as it may sound, digital hackers have reportedly held ‘Pirates of Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ for ransom.
The Hollywood Reporter said that Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that hackers demanded the studio paid a ransom, but said Disney is refusing to pay. The studio is working closely with federal investigators.
In the same news report, Iger said the hackers demanded that a huge sum be paid in Bitcoin. They said they would release five minutes of the film at first, and then in 20-minute chunks until their financial demands are met.
The Studio may want to establish whether this is simply a hoax like what happened last week with the work print of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
